When I was a kid I liked the comic books. These days, the adventure movies are rife with CGI and non-stop action. As a result, the story is basically lacking. This fits the definition of amusement, that is, NOT to think.
I prefer to be challenged in a film or a book rather than know what to expect so easily. A screenplay writer pal told me that in any movie, one need only watch the first 10 minutes to know the story. Interesting, right?
Don't like it. Don't see it. No reason to piss in someone else's cornflakes. Seriously.
It's Joss Whedon doing a movie with the world's greatest superhero team. That's what all the buzz is about.
I don't really know what else there is to say about it. A man who has given the world Buffy and Spike and Angel and Dr. Horrible brings us Iron Man and The Hulk and Thor and Captain America on the big screen. If that doesn't excite you, I don't know what would.

Interesting, and spectacularly untrue. Here, explain the story of, oh, 'The Usual Suspects' after only seeing the first 10 minutes.

It's going to be as good as these things get. And it's a bold experiment to have a bit of irony in such a serious subject matter.

I mean, this is Joss frickin' Whedon we are talking about. Have you seen Firefly/Buffy/Dr. Horrible?
although, yes the marketing on this film IS kinda strange..
Not a movie fan these days and missed most of the lead-up movies, but ... I'm impressed with the approach. I like the stress on teamwork; seems balanced in its approach to so many characters; the villain works. It has to be assessed against: if you were handed all of these elements and told to make a two hour movie out of them that would please your disparate audience, here's Joss Whedon's crack at it - would you do as well?

As others have wrote before, this is not just a comic book super hero team movie, it's a Josh Whedon movie.

No.
One thing people have noted is that the trailers are pushing this onto the blockbuster crowd.
It is a bit surprising that none of Joss's dialogue skills have been showcased in any of these trailers.
I'll be seeing it, but I'm definitely feeling burn out on these kinds of films. Prolly looking forward to Prometheus more.

i think something like 73% of major motion pictures are based on super hero comics these days
i'll see the movie when it gets to tv.
till then i'll do just fine with whatever else is on tv.
movies are terrible, yeah sfx but in the end all the marvel movies (except the first 2 x-men, and first class) were just shitty.
Yeah, if you have any idea who Joss Whedon is (and him being probably the most relevant figure in geek culture and SF/Fantasy TV EVER, you kinda should have an idea), you can't not be at least a little excited about this movie...
Thor's special effects were pretty amazing though.
Really seemed like it was another world.
To be honest, the endless amount of worship for Joss Whedon is kind of worrying.
I won't deny that the man can turn a one liner, but his characters do seem to inhabit the same sense of humour and way of talking, be it present day or the future wild west. Boiled down to it, they all sound like Joss Whedon, bantering hip, ironic dialogue back and forth between each other.
Honestly, my biggest issue with this movie is that it is by Joss Whedon.
Yeah, I think you may be swimming against the current here, Pat. I'm looking forward to it for sure, but not especting a life changing experience.
Am I awaiting it with bated breath? No. Will I go see it? Yes. Why? It looks fun and dynamic and pretty much something that you want to catch on the big screen rather than the small. I expect it to be a fun evening out. Also, I want to see how they work with the ensemble cast. The previous movies have established most of the characters in a stand-alone sense; it should be interesting to see how they pull it off (well or poorly) on the screen.*
But mostly, it's an excuse to catch a likely entertaining flick with my wife. I have no greater expectations than that.
@RD Riley. You forgot Whedon's greatest contribution: Firefly. If you can make a space cowboy show work, you can make anything work.
No Pat, your not the only one. I think this looks so damn stupid I can't hardly stand it. The Captain America costume looks so awful irl I can't help but laugh everytime I see it. Xmen did it right by updating their costumes with the leather and stuff to make it look modern. Sticking with the old costumes is a bad idea. Hawkeye and Blackwidow are the only two that look decent imo. I will not pay to see this.
