Why must they sing???
Still think that two movies for such a short book means that it's going to be mostly filler and not enough killer. . .

According to something Jackson said that I read somewhere the reason it's two movies is that they are going to cover what Gandalf does for the half the book he is missing and some other stuff that is in Tolkeins notes but never is explained in the book.
For all we know theese movies might not be as long as the LOTR films. After that trillogy my faith in PJs ability to make this great is pretty much doubtless.
Thank God, they are singing!

And I'm quite sure that there will be plenty of "action" - much more than in the book itself. I suspect that they will show Lothlórien's fight against Dol Gouldur. That should provide for sufficient action. ;)

Looks fantastic! Entirely confirms they'll recapture the flavour of the LOTR trilogy rather than taking a just-for-kids approach, which is all to the good as far as I'm concerned.
Sounds as though they will be including a lot of the stuff going on behind the scenes, such as the the Necromancer at Dol Guldur (ie where Gandalf keeps disappearing to), etc, to better have the films serve as back story to the Lord of the Rings. Whether or not that constitutes "filler" would be a matter for debate and probably depends on how well it is integrated into the main narrative, but I'm inclined to trust Peter Jackson's judgment as to what should be in and what should be out. Honestly, it's nice just to have some quality movies to look forward to.
As others have said, I expect the "filler" to be stuff from the lore, whether the histories at the back of Silmarillion or the appendices at the back of LotR. We know a lot more about what was going on during the course of The Hobbit than was ever in the book, without ever having to make anything up whole-cloth.
I'm super excited about this.
P.S. Have you read The Hobbit? Everyone sings, all the time.
Yeah, Pat. The singing is AWESOME! Love how brooding that is.
And yeah, the two movies will fill out Gandalf and Galadriel's confronting of the darkness in Mirkwood ect, plus the bookends with Frodo and older Bilbo.
Sheesh, Pat, you have to be one of the only people (maybe THE only) I've seen who has posted the trailer with negative comments.

I just hate singing in books. Even more in movies. . .
Singing was not good? Although I don´t consider the song the only reason why the trailer was so great - I loved the visuals which looked breathtaking - but the song created the right middle earth mood and I was surprised how the filmmakers managed to transport me back to the magical world of Tolkien with it. I didn´t like Gandalf going on his own quest to Dol Goldur, but I hope it´s just a little part in the overall big picture, like when he went to minas tirith and researched about the history of the ring in LOTR. I didn´t like the ruins he was visiting either, looked to generic not original enough.
I think there was SOOO much hype for this trailer that audiences were bound to be slightly dissapointed. I've already watched it like 5 times and the song keeps growing on me... I'm glad it had a darker tone to it, if it had been happy and cheerful I think I would have been pissed. Either way this movie is going to blow all the other Fantasy movies out of the water... I suspect Thorin might be the BAD ASS of 2012...

Jackson and the studio only have the rights for THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. They cannot use any material from THE SILMARILLION, UNFINISHED TALES or any of the other books (in fact, they had to make things expressly different, which is why the Battle of the Gladden Fields in the first movie is nothing like the detailed account in UNFINISHED TALES). The Tolkien Estate is watching them like a hawk to ensure this is the case.
My heart fell too when I first heard the singing, but HOLY SHIT! By the time they were done, a chill went up my spine. Those dwarves are gonna rock.

I was surprised that I enjoyed the singing- very ominous. The trailer looks awesome, but count me in with Pat. The Hobbit should not be two movies, and stretching out the Necromancer backstory from Tolkien's "notes" doesn't make it any better. I'm sure the battle of the Five Armies will be an hour and a half in part 2, but while stretching out the battle scenes in Two Towers and Return of the King mainly worked, the Hobbit is a much more intimate and less epic story, and focusing on battles to such a large degree (if they do, this is conjecture) IMO betrays the tone of the book. And tone is much more important in adaptations than individual plot/character details.
Of course I'll still see this opening night. But I can't imagine it'll be anywhere near as good as a whole as the Lord of the Rings movies.

Y'all anti-singing types must be younger than me. When I heard that song start, it brought back vivid memories of watching the old animated version of the Hobbit when I was about 8. I still remember that tune and how eerie it sounded. Music sticks with you.
The song made me shiver through my bones. A truly epic moment, I just can't wait for next year.
Singing aside, i'm pretty sure they could have put all the material from the book in one film. They will stuff this full of long shots and PJ's silly obsession with Slo-Mo, stretching it into two separate films (milking the franchise). I wish they would have let someone else direct it (I know, I know, they tried), and injected some new blood and vision into the mythology. I wasn't too impressed with PJ's vision on the LOTR films.
The song was the best part of the trailer. Chills. Never gotten those while watching a movie trailer before.
Jackson will polish these films and make them his finest yet--you can bet on that.
Singing and poetry were the two things most missing from LOTR. Geez Pat. Seriously?
